Press Release: Unist’ot’en Clan Enacts Declaration as Law

Unist’ot’en Settlement Camp (August 6, 2015):
The Unist’ot’en Declaration is first declared today, August 6th, 2015 and applies to the area known as Unist’ot’en territory. This declaration is enacted in response to increasing encroachment onto Unist’ot’en territory by the Crown and associated industry and RCMP.

Exercising our unbroken, unextinguished and unceded right to govern and occupy these lands, the Unist’ot’en clan of the Wet’suwet’en Nation have enacted the Unist’ot’en Declaration as official statement and law governing Unist’ot’en territory.

This declaration is signed unanimously by the Unist’ot’en Chiefs and Wet’suwet’en chiefs as noted.

Now enacted as law through the inherent jurisdiction of the Unist’ot’en Clan, all activities, development and actions undertaken by government or industry within Unist’ot’en territory must be consistent with the terms of this declaration.

Any further communications should be directed to Unist’ot’en Spokesperson Freda Huson in writing before any further actions are taken, including unannounced visits to Unist’ot’en territory. Please govern yourselves accordingly.
